Porta Germaniae is located on and near a low ridge overlooking the Dyje River floodplain, south of Breclav (Luntenburg) in southern Moravia. Southeast of the ridge is the Mokrina - the marshes created by the confluence of the Dyje, Kyjovka, and Morava rivers.

The ridge stretches for nearly two thousand paces near the eastern bank of the Dyje River. At its highest point, the ridge is about fifteen paces higher than the annual high-water mark of the Dyje River. The floodplain to the south, covered with oak-hornbeam forest, stretches between the ridge and the subsidence banks of the Dyje River. Patches of reeds and occasional hrudz (sandbars) dot the banks of the river below the floodplain, which is flooded from late May through July, with pools of standing water in low-lying areas through much of the year.

The covenant spreads out across the land at the northern edge of the Mokrina, between the Dyje and Morava rivers. The total area of Foedus land is about twenty-six square miles, although a little more than half of that area is Mokrina. The Zameck vesnice, named for the large wooden manor, or Zameck, sits to the northeast of the ridge. Houses are scattered around the Zameck and the track leading to the nearest mundane settlement, the market village of Breclav. Five miles to the east, the Morava vesnice spreads along the west bank of the Morava river.

An enormous arboreal church, Sacrarium Nemoris, dominates the northern end of the ridge, surrounded by terraced atria of hedges and flowering trees. The remainder of the ridge is covered in clover and crocus, sedum, marigold, aster, foxglove, and snapdragon flowers.

If one can see through the boundary of the regio, however, the true nature of the covenant is revealed. The regio boundary surrounds the ridge at a distance of approximately one hundred and fifty paces outside the ruins of an oval earthen embankment. The area covered by the boundary is quite large, over two hundred acres, or nearly a third of a square mile of ground. Within the regio are four layers of increasingly stronger magical auras: regio exterior (1), regio media (4), regio interior (6), and regio ima (8). The majority of covenfolk live and work inside the hranice, as they call the regio, and are rarely seen by outsiders.
