adoga lies about one hundred miles south-southeast of Insula Valaamis, on the Volkhov river near the southern shore of Lake Aldoga. First settled centuries ago, it remains primarily a trading center, with a wooden fortress overlooking the river, and a small plotbische (shipyard) capable of repairing most ships and building lodyi. |
