Herds

Shetland: The bulk of the Covenant's herd (around 300 head) is composed of hardy Shetland cattle, dun or red-pied in color.  Shetland cattle provide beef for the Covenant as well as hides for parchment and leather.

Welsh Black: This smaller herd (around 120 head) is composed of larger Welsh cattle, mostly black, but with the occasional red cow.  This herd is mainly grazed for beef, as its hides are very dark and unsuitable for parchment, but are useful for general leatherwork or armor.

Goats: The Covenant keeps a smallish (40 head) herd of Norse goats for meat, milk, and hides.

Donkeys: This small herd (around 30 head) of donkeys is mostly split among the sheep flocks.  Jennies are bonded to a flock of sheep to help provide protection and calm the flock.  A few jennies and a single jack are kept as a separate herd near the Covenant.

Ponies: The Covenant also keeps a small (20 head) herd of Norse ponies for use in herding cattle and sheep or as pack animals.  These animals stand between 11 and 13 hands high.
